FIRM SLATED TO PRESENT INTERNATIONAL LAW PROGRAM 

Roberta Burnette, the firm's managing attorney, was recently selected to present a program on International Business Law for the State Bar of California's Section Education Institute to be held in Long Beach in January 2010.  The program will focus on legal issues for businesses planning to take operations across borders or seek foreign financing.  Ms. Burnette serves on the International Labor and Employment Law Committee of the American Bar Association and  the International Labor Law Subcommittee of the ABA Employment Rights and Responsibilities Committee.

BURNETTE NAMED 2010 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA "SUPER LAWYER"

Roberta Burnette was recently honored as a Southern California "Super Lawyer" for 2010.  She was previously recognized as a Super Lawyer for 2009.  She will be featured in the Los Angeles Lawyer Magazine and the West Coast edition of the New York Times.  Congratulations Roberta!

BURNETTE SPEAKS ON WORKPLACE BIAS AND EMPLOYMENT MEDIATION

Roberta Burnette presented two programs at the State Bar Annual Meeting in San Diego in September 2009.  The first program, "Hot Button Workplace Bias Issues," was a 90-minute presentation by Ms. Burnette and Tuyet Nguyen, an associate from Gleason & Favarote in Los Angeles.  The workplace bias program was attended by over 200 attorneys and web cast live for online audiences.  The second program, "Advanced Strategies for Employment Mediation," was a 90-minute presentation by Ms. Burnette, Lawrence W. Crispo (who is a mediator and retired Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court), and Jill Switzer (who is a mediator and former Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Bank of the West, Los Angeles Office). 

Ms. Burnette also presented a one-hour program for the Santa Barbara County Bar Association in October 2009 on "Hot Button Workplace Bias Issues."

INTERNATIONAL EMPLOYMENT LAW PROGRAMS IN MADRID AND LONDON

Roberta Burnette, the firm's managing attorney, participated in the 2009 American Bar Association International Labor and Employment Law Committee meetings in Madrid, Spain.   The meetings included discussions and analysis of international issues facing employers and employees, including cross-border employment, executive compensation packages and agreements, expatriation of employees, and conflicts of international law principals, particularly involving U.S. and European Union member countries ( EU Countries ).  Following the Madrid meetings, Ms. Burnette participated in the UK Employment Lawyers Association Trans-Atlantic meeting in London, England, which included a mock trial of an employment case presented by Barristers from the United Kingdom.  Prior to the 2009 international meetings, Ms. Burnette particiated in the 2008 Committee meetings in Beijing, China, just before the Olympic Games.  In addition to serving on the ABA International Labor Law Committee, Ms. Burnette is a member of the International Labor Law Subcommittee of the ABA Employment Rights and Responsibilities Committee.  She is also a member of the Executive Compensation Subcommittee of the National Employment Lawyers Association.

HARRIS JOINS BUCHWALD TALENT & LITERARY AGENCY

Sarah Harris, former assistant at the Burnette Law Firm, left the firm to work for the Los Angeles office of the Don Buchwald & Associates, Inc. Talent and Literary Agency, which represents a large number of celebrity clients in its LA and New York offices.  Congratulations and good luck, Sarah!

FIRM PRESENTS EMPLOYMENT MEDIATION PROGRAM

Roberta Burnette presented a program at the 2009 State Bar of California Section Education Institute in Berkeley, California, on mediating employment cases.  The program included guidelines on successful mediation strategies and tactics for employment law cases.  She served on a panel with the Honorable Lawrence Crispo and attorney Jill Switzer.

FEDERAL COURTS PROGRAM PRESENTED BY ROBERTA BURNETTE

Roberta Burnette presented a speech as the State Bar of California Annual Meeting in Monterey, California, in September 2008 on Federal Court Practice in California.  Ms. Burnette's panel included Los Angeles attorneys Patricia McCabe and Mark Share.  The two-hour program discussed a variety of federal court issues, including jurisdiction, discovery, case management and trial.  Please contact our office for further information or a copy of the written materials.

BURNETTE PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL LABOR CONFERENCE IN BEIJING

Roberta Burnette participated in the American Bar Association International Labor Law Committee Mid-year Meeting in Beijing, China in 2008.  The meeting focused on emerging employment law concerns in India, China and other Asian Countries, as well as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria and other European Countries.  Ms. Burnette represents U.S. companies, including those doing business in and with foreign countries.

BURNETTE SPEAKS ON WORKPLACE BIAS LAW

Roberta Burnette recently presented several seminars on Worplace Bias Law, including programs for the San Bernadino County District Attorney's Office and the Ventura County Paralegal Associations.  The programs, which offer one hour CLE bias credit, cover issues relating to EEO laws as well as other lesser known bias laws in California.
